Restaurant Review: Krungthai Restaurant
San Jose, California

by Randy Ligh

AsianConnections.com is proud to present Dr. Randy Ligh's restaurant reviews.
Randy is one of those amazing individuals who does just about everything with excellence and style. He is an always-swamped pediatric dentist, a personal trainer,
a runner, and yes, a bonafide restaurant reviewer. Besides reviewing for AsianConnections, Randy is a contributing reviewer for the famous Zagat guides.
Since he is also a most eligible bachelor,  he dines out alot.
Here is one of his favorite picks!

One of my most favorite restaurants is Krungthai in San Jose. This always busy restaurant gets high marks for the consistent quality of its food. Before the owners opened a second restaurant recently a couple of miles away, I was always impressed with how the staff managed to maintain truly gracious service and excellent food even when the wait for tables ranged upwards to an hour even at 8pm and 9pm at night. With the second restaurant open, you can now comfortably get a table at either restaurant within a reasonably short period of time.

Thailand's cuisine has been influenced by various cultures. These influences have been amalgamated to form a distinctive style. Clean citrus tastes from kaffir limes and lemon grass, sweet flavors from coconut milk and palm sugar, sour contrasts from tamarind, spiciness from ginger, galangal and krachai, pungent aromas of garlic and the heated flavors of various chiles form the foundation of Thai cuisine.

Chef Prapa Siripakdi has been the head chef for nearly 11 years at this delightful restaurant. Fresh flowers, Thai ceramic vases and artwork embellish this tastefully decorated restaurant.

Every dish is a masterpiece involving a commingling of exotic flavors. They showcase five types of curry (green, yellow, red, panang, mussaman). The pineapple fried rice with prawns, chicken, cashew nuts, green peas, raisins, carrots and corn kernels served in a pineapple shell is a sight to behold. A variety of culinary applications for squid and prawns are all tempting. The sweet sticky rice with mango when in season provides for a nice closure of your meal.

The staff's friendly and responsive service combined with the savory cuisine will make your dining experience memorable. A second restaurant has recently opened just a couple of miles away.

Chef Prapa Siripakdi graciously shares with AsianConnectons her recipe for one of her signature dishes - Pad-Thai
